What exactly is iron deficiency anemia ?

This is a medical condition that can also be called “iron poor blood”.

It is not a disease but rather a condition that results from below-normal levels of hemoglobin in the red blood cells.

Hemoglobin is the iron-containing pigment of the red blood cells.

It is a protein that gives the red color to blood. Red blood cells are disc-shaped.

They carry oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from your body.

Red blood cells live for about 120 days in the bloodstream and then die.

If you have this condition, your body doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood.

In severe cases the lack of oxygen in the blood can possibly damage the heart, brain, and other organs of the body.

Very severe situations can even be fatal.

Although there are over 400 different forms of anemia, the three most common are attributed to:

  • iron-deficiency
  • vitamin B12 and
  • folic acid deficiency

What are the symptoms of anemia?

Fatigue is the main symptom of anemia.

The reason an anemic person will feel tired and weak is very obvious.

The body's tissues are being starved of oxygen.

Mild conditions can occur without clear symptoms and may be detected only during a medical exam that includes a blood test.

Some of the other symptoms of iron deficiency anemia are:

  • Pale complexion
  • Sensitive tongue
  • Tiredness
  • Chest pains
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • Rapid breathing
  • Low blood pressure
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Ringing in the ears

If the anemia is caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency you can also include -

  • Jaundice
  • Pins and needles in the hands and feet

to the signs of anemia listed above.

If the anemia is caused by a folic acid deficiency some additional symptoms may include -

  • Bloody stool
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weight loss
  • Listlessness
  • Chest pain

How is anemia diagnosed?

Iron deficiency anemia can be detected from a simple blood test that measures the level of iron-bearing protein hemoglobin in the blood.

This blood sample will determine the size, shape, and color of the blood cells.

Iron deficiency will be suspected when the red cells are low in number and unusually small.

Bone marrow biopsy is helpful in diagnosing vitamin B12 anemia, which is the removal of bone marrow for further examination under a microscope.

A sample of bone marrow is removed from the back of the pelvic bone or from the breastbone.

Analysis of this sample allows physicians to determine whether abnormal cells, such as cancer cells, are interfering with its function.

The goal of anemia treatment will be to increase the amount of oxygen that your blood can carry.

With proper treatment, many types of anemia can be cured, especially those caused by iron deficiency and vitamin deficiency.

We believe the best way to do this is with juicing recipes that are rich in vitamins, iron and folic acid.
